BEYOND 10 EXHIBITION JUNE 2010
Out of 40 submissions from artists around South Africa 5 got selected and commissioned to create work that would represent the theme "Beyond 10" for the NIKE concept store in Melville, Johannesburg. I was very pleased to hear I got selected. A dream job actually as I was given totally creative freedom and got paid for it. Wow. I wanted to do something a little different for this one which included my friend Andrew Mcgibbon and Pete Reyonolds. Big up yo!
Exhibition is at:
Gallery on Fourth, Melville, Johannesburg from June to August 2010.
You can check out some behind the scenes right here.
THE WORLD IS FLAT AND EVERYTHING IS OK APRIL 2010
This is the third time I am entering this competiton and is one of the most "political" art works I have done. I wanted to create a piece of work that would represent a lot of feelings that I have with the current state of the world. Click on the link below on a detailed explanation and photo's from the opening nite.
It was really great fun doing this piece. Every year in ever major city Absa choose's the top 100 works which gets then exhibted at the Absa Gallery In Johannesburg later in the year. The winner recieves 6 months residency in Paris to work
on a show at the gallery in JHB! I think its such a great chance to show people my work in such an awesome gallery -I am not concerned with winning as the standard is so high but it would be truly awesome to experience Paris and to focus on just painting. To read more clickhere.

TOUR DIARY JANUARY 2009
Its been really awesome doing the past exhibition with Senyol from Cape Town. Over a year of planning, painting, designing, drawing and organizing was put into this body of work and it was a real dream come true to do this touring exhibition. To celebrate the awesomeness Mega has written a little tour diary along with some pics for your reading pleasure on our trip to Cape Town where we hanged out with Senyol and friends, set up the show, fed squirrles and enjoyed spending some time away from Durban. Big thanks to Jaco, Julian Goldswain, Justin - thanks for helping with the cupcakes, Senyol (in the city!) and of course my lovely Meg! Would like to thank everyone out there for supporting us in buying clothing and artwork from us and we really look forward to seeing you all again in the future!
So after many months of hard work the Durban leg of the show is up. Senyol and I had a great time putting up the show. It moves to Cape Town in October. SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS! While he was here in Durban we did a little interview which I have uploaded for your listening pleasure! We talk about our work and ideas for the show! You need quicktime to to play it or itunes.
I have been listening to a few podcasts while I have been working on this exhibition. Rob Bell's podcasts are awesome as well as "creating success" at podcast directory -check out Jo Jacksons interview if you into illustration. Also Michael Sieben & Cody Hudson interview at fecalface.com is pretty good too! Senyol and I are hard at work doing the finishing touches of our exhibition. I have worked on about 30 new works: 15 of them are paintings and the other 15 are experimental works, ranging from digital prints, lightboxes to caps, shirt and hoodies. It's been fun and hard work putting this show together so please come out and support the show. I will be super happy to see you there! After the tour ends in November I will be uploading pictures from the shows as well as a short documentary film based on the exhibition!
Dates for the show:
06-24 SEPTEMBER 2008 at Gallery 415. 415 Umgeni road.
Show moves to Cape Town: 10-24 OCTOBER 2008 at Salon 91. 91 Kloof street.
ABSA MARCH 2008
Every year I miss entering this competiton and always hear about the deadline when it's too late to enter...What's changed?
Nothing! Only this time I heard about this competition two weeks before the hand in date and got cranking on three lightbox
portrait designs WHICH involved some late nights. Here you can see one of them. The rest can be seen at the opening nite
sometime in July at the ABSA gallery in Joburg. All the "best" work is going to be shown there. Super glad to have made it to
the finals and to be putting up my work with some of the best! These works are about the energy crisis that we in South
Africa are facing at the moment and these designs deal with three South African people - white, indian and african males
each saying "keep hope alive" in their specific mother tongue. I wanted to play with "light" and the idea that we need to work
together to solve our problems. The winner of this competition wins a trip to Paris to work in a studio for 6 months expenses
paid! There is some good work on show.
CUSTOM KICKS MARCH 2008
MAKI MAKI - A design company based in Europe run by a couple asked me to be apart of this fantastic book. It's so great to
be apart of this book as it features and documents customized sneakers and interviews with "artists" from around the globe.
There is loads of work in this book and it's a must for any street fanatic! For me personally though I am a home boy, the
streets are not for me! Check out MAKI MAKI's website or Amazon books to buy the book..
MURAL PAINTING FEBRUARY 2008
I recently completed this mural design for my wonderful girlfriends Church. Its an amazing new Church and I felt that I needed
to do something for it. It did not take me too long if I add up the hours but I did split the time up over about 4 weeks... the
weirdest thing is that the church is built under the market that is upstairs and every two minutes or so you can hear someone
flushing the chain or something upstairs...it kept me company on those lonely nights when I was painting alone... Special
THANKS goes out to my girlfriend Megan who helped paint the clouds!!! THANK YOU.
OFF THE WALL APRIL 2007
A couple of years back I did my first series of 20 paintings at the OFF THE WALL and this fella JP was talking to me saying
how much he'd dig to do some paintings too. At the time none of my friends where doing exhibitions and since then it's been
awesome to see people doing more art stuff......However of recent times I have seen alot of people biting other people's
styles ...something that is not very cool, maybe it's because art is the "cool" thing right now,....However JP's stuff is really
rad and fun. There is something special about JP's stuff. Keep up the good work pal!
It was with great pleasure and honour to be apart of the sketchbook project exhibition that was held at ARTSPACE in Durban
this year in April 2007. This year I did not exhibit any work as I am taking my time on doing some more awesome pieces of
work.I have also been pretty busy with freelance work for the first half of this year and taking the rest of the year to use my
spare time working on a whole lot of new work. It was so great to work on this mural and with all the amazing artists like
CREATE and good friend from Cape Town Paul otherwise known as Senyol (!) he is the man!! We basically brainstormed in
the morning with all the artists that came out and threw up a concept on the wall in a matter of hours....not the greatest of
work as we had limited time but again it was just great to paint with kids I would not normally associate myself with...
DESIGN INDABA CAPE TOWN FEBRUARY 2007
Big thanks to the owners at ARTSPACE gallery for putting in a good word for me to showcase my skills at the Design Indaba!
It was such an awesome experience and I met so many people!! I also got to hang out with Senyol again and he did a live
painting with me - awesome! Big Shout out to Senyol for taking Megan, Candice and I to all the rad places in Cape Town.
(Word) Here is some of the stuff I put up. Not seen here is some shirts and the live painting we did..
