So here are a few pics from the opening nite as well as my creative process for my artwork that I created for the show. Enjoy.
"The world is flat and everything is ok" is the most political and socially inspired piece I have done. I think the current "art" scene needs to raise its voice and become more expressive about the ills of this world. Hanging out with my brother we watched a movie called "food inc" - a movie I suggest everyone to watch. It talks about the food industry in America and how its effecting our lives in a big way. I won't get too detailed on the movie but what really got me thinking was how money has really become a huge idol in our lives. I can't understand how greedy people have become not to mention our politicians and I really wanted to convey the idea of how almost everyone in modern society is driven towards making money. I'm not saying that money is not important - I just think the economic system should be evaluated and how we spend our time consuming in technology, materialism and the internet is worrying me. I also wanted to touch on issues of how man has become so detached from nature and God. The other day my wife and I had monkey's in our garden and I was just thinking how disconnected we are to their lives and to the rest of nature. Maybe its the inner hippy in me.
Anyway the title "The world is flat and everything is ok" comes from the idea of when people believed that the world was flat and refused to even think of the idea that the world was round - and when it was proved it changed the world radically. I think at the moment I feel we are living with the same mindset. Hopefully it gets proven that how mainstream society is living is wrong soon!
When I create a new artwork I generally get inspired by something I have read, watched or inspired by something that moves me and it could be from the Bible or even a song. I start off with really lose sketches - I have got tons of sketch pads..this idea came when Meg and I were on holiday earlier this year and I just started drawing symbols of things that would represent exploitation of nature and consumption.
I then proceed to ink them in and eventually scanned into my computer. Normally I like to paint - this is a reaction to the proliferation of the computer and its populist technologies. However I thought for the subject matter for this piece it would be very fitting to do it in the programs I would normally use for an advert or commercial illustration. I use Illustrator and Photoshop. After reworking them in Illustrator I add a book texture over the work to give it some of that old school feeling.
Then its printed onto archival paper and this print was 1.2m x 1.8m. Its then pasted onto wood and mixed with spraypaint and watercolours. I wanted to finish off the design with a really nice flat piece of wood and rounding off the corners to represent hope and the idea that change is possible - kinda abstract huh?
The opening nite was a huge success! Lots of people came out and my work got selected to go to the next round which will be at the Absa Gallery in Joburg later this year. Thanks for reading!
